Kleine Klausing, Bernd Johannes (Joan)

rk, Dienstknecht, Schmied, * Holdorf 01.12.1808, ~ 04.12.1808, Paten: Herm. Kinkel, Catharina Graman, J. Henrich Bolling, + Teutopolis, Effingham County, Illinois (USA) 27.09.1854
lebte in Holdorf; Auswanderung in die USA 1831; Vermerk auf website von Herrn Honkomp unter www.honkomp.de: "Auswanderer von Damme in die USA - u.a. Klausing, Bernd, Sohn des Bernd Klausing, bei Kolon Borgerding, 1 (steht wohl für die Personenanzahl, die ausgewandert ist) 1831 Ihorst"; lived in Holdorf; Emigration into the USA 1831; note on website by Mr. Honkomp under www.honkomp.de: "emigrants of Damme into the USA - among other people: Klausing, Bernd, son of the Bernd Klausing, lived by Kolon Borgerding, 1 (probably stands for the person's number which emigrated) 1831 Ihorst"; Johannes Bernd Kleine Klausing landed in Baltimore (no proof); from there he is said to have gone to Cincinnati (where many Germans at that time settled) and than to Dayton, both in Ohio. He met and married Maria Elizabeth Fortman (from the Vechta area in Germany). Around 1840 Johannes Bernd and Elizabeth relocated to Effingham County in Illinois. There was a large migration of Germans, mostly from Cincinnati, to this area at this time. The group they came with was called the German Land Company, led by John Waschfort (Waschefort). There were also other german people from the area Damme and Vechta in this group - e.g. Clemens Uptmoor. They purchased a large amount of land in Effingham and began a new settlement, near Teutopolis. It sounds like Johannes Bernd was very involved with the new settlement, assisting in starting a new church, he was Justice of the Peace (Judge) for a time, the town blacksmith, and he and Mary Elizabeth were very close to the Waschfort's (John Waschfort was president of the town) and the family of Clemes Uptmoor. They were god-parents to each others children. At times Johannes Bernd spelled his last name with a "C", which is not unusual for the spelling to change. Johannes Bernd and Mary Elizabeth passed away 1854 at a young age. At this time (1854-1855) a terrible plague of cholera sufferd Effingham County (another two cholera epidemic happened in 1832-1833 and 1872-1873). Melvin Klausing told me in 2003 what happened to Bernd Johannes and his family:"He was a pig farmer, and blacksmith and Justice of the Peace. The last years of his life were in Teutopolis, County of Effingham, Illinois USA. Many documents are Court House records concerning his business as "JP" as well as church records from St. Francis Catholic Church. The "Cholera" epidemic of 1854 first wiped out the pig farm. Then his son Peter died, then his wife MARIA ELISABETH (1818) died. J. B. died on 27 September 1854. The irony of the story is this: Due to the cholera deaths, household goods were sold at court house auction, then the house was burnt. The house and barn burning was to control the epidemic.Mr. Uptmoor (Uptmore) bought the bed for $5.00."
the following details are recorded in the Effingham County, Illinois census 1850: John B. Clausay, age 45, male, birth: Germany; Marion E. Clausay, age 35, female, birth Germany; John H. Clausay, age 14, male, birth Germany; John Hany Clausay, age 12, male, birth Ohio; J. Barny Clausay, age 10, male, birth Ohio; Mary Clausay, age 6, female, birth Illinois; Joseph Clausay, age 2, birth Illinois
